Open House 2010

It was good to see a great group of parents at last night’s open house, and I promised to keep this blog going to so you can keep up with HPD class. As always, my advice to parents is to ask their children what they have been doing in these sessions and what they are getting out of them.

At the moment, all the classes are working on Emergency First Response, with a focus on DRsABCDs, with Grade 6 completing the course for the first time.

Some quick tips for families:

- Have all the important phone numbers and contact people’s details posted by your phone

- Make up a first aid kit that is accessible and kept clean and safe

- Practice your family’s responses to events such as fires, earthquakes and accidents in the home

I will upload some useful documents soon, so you can print and go if needed.

Have a great 2010-11!

Learn CPR and Save a Life

First topic of the year for all students: Emergency First Response

Grade 6 will be learning it all for the first time.

Grades 7 & 8 will build on their knowledge from last year.

Grades 9 & 10 will review the essentials and practice CPR again.

Grades 8 & 11 will take part in a lifeguard skills course on their Outreach trip.

Fun Human Body Quiz

Here’s a fun quiz to start the year:

Health and Personal Development

HPD is a key part of a student’s educational experience at BIS. It forms a central role in pastoral care of students and in Middle and High School runs from Grade 6 through to Grade 12. HPD covers a range of issues in an inquiry-based, relevant and age-appropriate manner.

This blog is designed to keep parents informed of HPD developments and topics, and to allow students access to wider reading and learning activities.

To get HPD@BIS updates sent directly to your email, please click here or on the link to the right of the page (Subscribe to HPD @ Bandung International School by email). If you are already an RSS user, you can also subscribe to our RSS feed.

If you have any questions or contributions, please email them to Stephen Taylor at hpd@bisdragons.com.

Middle School Anti-Bullying Poetry Cafe

At the moment, we are making a big push on bullying in Middle School – covering this perennial issue in both HPD and Middle School Unity assemblies.

Students have been thinking about how the words and actions they use affect others and are currently researching or developing strategies to be used if you are the victim, the bully, a friend or onlooker.

As part of this unit, students have been trying to put the feelings of bullying into words and present them as a poem – which they will perform at Middle School Assembly on 14th November.

Also on that day, we will be wearing anti-bullying ribbons that each students has designed to represent their feelings about bullying. If you see them wearing these in school, please stop them and ask what their ribbon represents. Why did they choose those colours? What do the slogans or images mean to them?
