HPD is a key part of a student’s educational experience at BIS. It forms a central role in pastoral care of students and in Middle and High School runs from Grade 6 through to Grade 12. HPD covers a range of issues in an inquiry-based, relevant and age-appropriate manner.
This blog is designed to keep parents informed of HPD developments and topics, and to allow students access to wider reading and learning activities.

It was good to see a great group of parents at last night’s open house, and I promised to keep this blog going to so you can keep up with HPD class. As always, my advice to parents is to ask their children what they have been doing in these sessions and what they are getting out of them.
At the moment, all the classes are working on Emergency First Response, with a focus on DRsABCDs, with Grade 6 completing the course for the first time.
Some quick tips for families:
- Have all the important phone numbers and contact people’s details posted by your phone
- Make up a first aid kit that is accessible and kept clean and safe
- Practice your family’s responses to events such as fires, earthquakes and accidents in the home
I will upload some useful documents soon, so you can print and go if needed.
Have a great 2010-11!

Middle School HPD: Basic First Aid

Middle School students are busy learning how to cope with minor (and not-so-minor) emergencies in and around the home in our new Basic First Aid unit. Hopefully, they have already been asking you for help in finding materials for a first aid kit and for all the contact details that will keep you safe.
Over the next few weeks, students will learn (and teach each other) some basic first aid techniques. To ‘pass’ the first aid course, they need to:
1. Bring a complete first aid kit to school
2. Show that your emergency contact cards have been completed fully
3. Stay Calm, Get Help!
4. Keep yourself safe – describe ways to help others without endangering yourself.
5. Be able to demonstrate first aid procedures for:
a. Shock
b. Bleeding
c. Burns
d. Poisoning
e. Allergies, Bites and Stings
f. Choking
